high maintenance looks at 2 people at a table conversing with one another. general colour scheme is black which coincide with the low key lighting to create a subdued and calm feeling towards this sequence. only diegetic sound also creates a greater realist sense to the films feeling. the fact that the beginning sequence remains in the same setting an provides mainly closeups with a small range of shots upon the 2 characters and therefore makes the general feel uncomfortable as the camerawork and lighting tends to block visuals which, as a spectator makes us more intrigued as to the bigger details of the room.
the sound is very precise and calibrated o the small movements. can hear the chewing, sound of glass slinging with swallowing and drinking which doesn't sound nice to the ears. it makes the situation a lot more cringey and skin crawling. could be done to make the situation more dense and unkind or it could be used to highlight the boringness of the couples relationship.
performance using plane dry words with small talk such as 'how was your day dear' 'just people you know'. adds a melancholic feel to the film which adds to the darkened low key lit background.
the film leads up to the female calling the robotics 'tech support' this means that the woman's husband is simply an android explains a lot. the boring speech and action, etc. inspiration can be taken from this to create the same effect.
the narrative from starting a normal situation and completely turning the narrative on it's head. changing the normal form of narrative completely to change genre in a swift turn holds great power through spectatorship. the mid point of the film seems to hold a question for love. cinematography of showing the performance upon the female protagonists face looking at her new model then back to the old model as if it is to say that she'll miss her old artificial love. this raises many questions. what can be taken from this is how such a small sequence looking from one thing to the other can emerge great questions such as whether artificial love exists. the plot twist of the woman also being an android questions narrative. this can be incorporated for something to be against the very thing it is.
