Clerks: the film had a grand total budget of $27,500 in 1993. the whole film was set to be the first independent film by director Kevin Smith, neither had any other big film company backed it until miramax bought all rights to the film for $227,500 in 1994 at the sundance festival. the films budget came from 10 maxed out credit cards with a $2,000 budget and an insurance claim from his flooded comic book collection which added an extra $8,000 to his total budget. the film was also shot during night time during closing hours go the convenience store in which the film was shot in, hence why the shutters were closed. the film was, too, shot in black and white as using colour would be too expensive. people who starred in this film were either friends to Kevin smith, or Kevin smith himself, others such as nriam o'halloran and jeff anderson

high maintenance looks at 2 people at a table conversing with one another. general colour scheme is black which coincide with the low key lighting to create a subdued and calm feeling towards this sequence. only diegetic sound also creates a greater realist sense to the films feeling. the fact that the beginning sequence remains in the same setting an provides mainly closeups with a small range of shots upon the 2 characters and therefore makes the general feel uncomfortable as the camerawork and lighting tends to block visuals which, as a spectator makes us more intrigued as to the bigger details of the room. the sound is very precise and calibrated o the small movements. can hear the chewing, sound of glass slinging with swallowing and drinking which doesn't sound nice to the ears. it makes the situation a lot more cringey and skin crawling. could be done to make the situation more dense and unkind or it could be used to highlight the boringness of the couples relationship. perf
